Commissioned AI Choreography - be.fore
be.fore david alan + Mercedes Searer, 2021 Performer: Mercedes Searer (dance/choreography) AI tech david allen Video |
This 1 minute clip is a 2021 commissioned choreography by david allen using allen’s be.fore tech, an augmented intelligence (AI) tool used to collect expressive movement data that enables dancers to produce digital derivatives of their expressive movement. The clip shows the kinetic derivative created by the AI enabled program; a bony landmark skeleton realizes its embodied form, as it moves from downstage to upstage through various choreographies. A trail of its movements is left in various degrees of visual decay, suggesting the past and present mingling together. This is a technology that I have used while researching and creating Possible Worlds. The program can additionally upload other visual assets (films, photos etc) that are responsive to where bodies are in space and their scale while moving. At the conclusion of the 1 minute clip, there are examples of the program’s multiple uses in early research for Possible Worlds.
